Doing Education

Whoever poses the question of the role and tasks of art academies today will have to to take the conditions of affirmative economic instrumentalization into consideration. Apart from the issue of whether art – or anything at all – can actually be taught, what is at stake are the options of these institutions to go beyond the further dissemination of a “norm of deviation”. Understanding the “student-exhibition” as a potential self-reflexive tool within this negotiation what might be adequate strategies and working methods to combine educational with political, socially relevant purposes? Taking three examples of student-exhibitions at the Leipzig Academy of Arts as a starting point the talk will focus on issues of spatial politics, visual economics as well as notions of (artistic) labour and open them up for further debate. Followed by a discussion with the workshop participants and Dag Erik Elgin.

The lecture is part of SLOHAGENHALLAH a project by Gerard Byrne, Rike Frank, Tirdad Zolghadr and students from Oslo National Academy of the Arts, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and International Academy of Art Palestine

Please note: The lecture will take place at Atelier Felix, Kunstnernes Hus
