Whoever poses the question of the role and tasks of art academies today will have to to take the conditions of affirmative economic instrumentalization into consideration. Apart from the issue of whether art – or anything at all – can actually be taught, what is at stake are the options of these institutions to go beyond the further dissemination of a “norm of deviation”. Understanding the “student-exhibition” as a potential self-reflexive tool within this negotiation what might be adequate strategies and working methods to combine educational with political, socially relevant purposes? Taking three examples of student-exhibitions at the Leipzig Academy of Arts as a starting point the talk will focus on issues of spatial politics, visual economics as well as notions of (artistic) labour and open them up for further debate. Followed by a discussion with the workshop participants and Dag Erik Elgin.

Beatrice von Bismarck (Leipzig/ Berlin), is professor at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig for Art History, Visual Culture and Cultures of the Curatorial. 1989 – 1993 Städel Museum, Frankfurt/Main, dept. 20th Century art. 1993 – 1999 Lüneburg University, co-founder and -director of the project-space “Kunstraum der Universität Lüneburg”. 2000-2012 program director of the Leipzig Academy’s gallery. Co-founder of the project-space “/D/O/C/K-Projektbereich”. 2009 initiator of the MA-program “Cultures of the Curatorial”. On research leave from April 2015 to April 2017 funded by the “Opus Magnum” program of the VWStiftung. Current research areas: The curatorial; effects of neo-liberalism and globalization on the cultural field; postmodern concepts of the “artist”.
