Årets største stipendutdeling

– Vi håper med denne tildelingen å gi deg som mottar stipend mulighet til å drive med det du måtte ønske for en stund. Skape ditt eget rom og utforske det du er mest interessert i, sa Hege Imerslund, direktør i Bildende Kunstneres Hjelpefond, til alle de fremmøtte studentene i Seilduken 1.

– Ved å gi en slik boost rett før studentene er ferdig med studiene, når de er spent på hvordan de skal klare å etablere seg som kunstnere, så håper vi å gi dem mot og ro til å tro på seg selv og selvtillit til å holde ut, sier Imerslund etter utdelingen. Og legger til at dette er den beste delen av jobben hennes.

– Det er veldig inspirerende å møte studentene og gi de disse stipendene. Vi følger jo med på dem og ser ofte igjen navnene på stipendmottakerne flere år frem i tid. Så vi har en tro på at vi er med og styrker dem inn i en karriere som kunstnere.

I talen til studentene la hun også vekt på at selv om ikke alle får tildelt stipend nå, er det viktig å huske på at det likevel kan være mange muligheter for støtte i fremtiden. I tillegg til stipender tilbyr de blant annet også reise til Svalbard eller opphold i Roma.

Juryens tildeling av BKH stipend for 2023-2024 

BKHs kunststudentstipend deles ut til første- og andreårs masterstudenter ved fire høyere kunstutdanningsinstitusjoner i Norge. Stipendene skal være til inspirasjon for studentene, og bidra til økt kunnskap om kunstavgiften på 5%. Denne går tilbake til kunstnerne gjennom ulike tiltak og stipend.

I år går 15 stipend på 45 000 kroner til masterstudenter fra Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo, ved avdelingene Kunst og håndverk og Kunstakademiet.

Om Bildende Kunstneres Hjelpefond (BKH)

Bildende Kunstneres Hjelpefond (BKH) ble opprettet av Stortinget i forbindelse med lov om kunstavgift av 1948. Loven legger 5 % avgift på all offentlig omsetning i Norge av billedkunst, foto og kunsthåndverk. Midlene fra avgiften fordeles tilbake til kunstnerne i form av vederlag, stipend, tilskudd og priser.
Kunstavgiften har siden oppstarten gitt over 650 millioner kroner tilbake til kunstnere i Norge. Kunstavgiften og BKH yter dermed et betydelig bidrag til fremme av kunstnerisk mangfold og ny produksjon av kunst i Norge. 

Juryens tildeling av FKDS stipend 

I 2008 ble flere studentstipend slått sammen i FKDS stipendet, som deles ut til avgangsstudenter ved Kunstakademiet, kunst og håndverk og design. Kunst og håndverk og design vil dele ut sine stipend under åpningene av avgangsutstillingene i mai og juni, saken oppdateres etterhvert som stipendene deles ut.

Bachelor

Årets FKDS-pris ble tildelt Karen Berge under åpningen av bachelor medium- og materialbasert kunst sin avgangsutstilling Welcome and goodbye.

Master

Sebastian Rusten (MA2, tekstil)

Juryens begrunnelse: The recipient of this year's scholarship from the Fund for Art and Design Students has made a work that genuinely impressed the jury with its physical, transformative, and sensuous qualities.

The work speaks about impermanence, vulnerability, and about the inherent language found in the individual materials. A story about existence, about life, and the end. Whispering and with consideration. The work is intensely present in the room. The colors are muted, but the smell draws us into the undergrowth and into the ground. It becomes the ground, the ground we step over. The various components have been carefully worked into a whole that references the history of textiles and a design language that has followed man throughout the ages.

In creating a contrast between the meticulous preparation and crafting of the work with its impermanence, this artist challenges commonly held notions of labor and value that have broad relevance for contemporary society. The prize winner is from the field of textile art but has worked more referentially than directly with textiles. Using a range of natural materials such as spruce needles and birch roots, the artist creates not only a seeming rug or carpet but a landscape, a picture, a commentary on the use and distribution of resources. However, also applying specific patterns and techniques loaded with cultural references.

The project is a pertinent example of what contemporary crafted art is, details thought through, materially reflected and sensuously enchanting.

Design

Avdeling Design valgte i år å gi stipend til følgende kandidater:

1. Ali Onat Turker, master design fordypning interiørarkitektur og møbeldesign,
for avgangsprosjektet «Corporeal Spectactor: Redesigning the seat and the 
screen of the observer»

Juryens begrunnelse: The project highlights the issues of today’s understanding of comfort and domestic arrangements/layouts, where the key focus is to question our understanding of comfort and its political and societal implications. The candidate convincingly outlines how these notions are linked to capitalism, how they contribute to a sedated society of de-politicized subjects, as well as how design could help by challenging our own professional definitions and presuppositions. Through speculative scenarios the candidate cleverly suggests that the emancipation of the body should dictate how we arrange our spaces and make use of technologies of architecture and of the self.

2. Zarina Saidova, master design fordypning grafisk design og illustrasjon,
for avgangsprosjektet «Et godt sted»

Juryens begrunnelse: The students at GI, both on BA and MA, have tackled difficult subjects this year. We are impressed by their courage and boldness. It bodes well for the future. They will be an asset in the media of the future, no matter what.
We need those who can draw attention to flaws in society and problems around us. We need those who can tame the algorithms and economic graphs. We need those who can describe diagnoses and what happens after death.
This year’s scholarship goes to a student who worked with a timeless theme, the involuntary departure, flight, and desired arrival, in a good place. Zarina Saidova pushes the boundaries of comics and makes the reader a co-creator.
The printed version consists of five parts, which can be read in any order, and the same story unfolds on the exhibition wall, which will change during the exhibition period, and in the animations.
It is the journey that makes the destination worthwhile. But is it ahead or behind us?

3. Lydia May Hann, master design fordypning klesdesign og kostymedesign,
for the project «Shapeless Grey Cloth»

Juryens begrunnelse: Not only a singular project, but a practice of exploring many important and relevant perspectives on folk stories, ecology, relations, skin, and garments: This work constitutes a relevant addition to the post human discourse, and is an example of situated knowledge in materialised form. The designer speaks from a genuine and specific point of partial view, immerses herself in her theme, and invites the audience, sometimes functioning as participants, and collaborators, to join her in dialogue.
In Lydia Hanns project «Shapeless Grey Cloth», a tradition of folklore becomes an affective ‘hanger’ to explore the idea of the skin as an entrance to discuss what it means to put on a costume. Substituting the term costume, she says the right skin holds the power of transformation and that it offers access into this power of transformation, and gives entrance to how the body, person, skin merge and blur. She describes a notion of meeting the material as an equal and touch on human – non human collaboration and care. The work shares a beautiful journey – and demonstrates a sensibility to shifting contexts and an ability to absorb the unforeseen for use in her research matrix. Documentation and written reflections produced as part of artistic outcome makes it available to a wider audience. Lydia aims to elevate craft in the field of costume and costume in the performative field, and to center costume in performance. The methodology and design practice developed in the project Becoming a Selkie is a valuable contribution to the fields of artistic research and critical design practice.

Blixprisen 2023, 50 000 DKK 

Blixprisen på 50.000 DKK utdeles hvert år til en nyutdannet dansk og norsk billedkunstner fra hhv. Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi i København og Kunstakademiet ved Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo. Etter nøye vurdering, kom styret til Blixprisen fram til at Isan Maher Atif (2MA) tildeles stipendet.
