Many institutions use plagiarism detection software to detect potential plagiarism and to deter students from plagiarizing. But the practice of plagiarizing using appropriate word substitutions to elude detection software, known as rogeting, has quickly evolved as students and unethical academics are trying to stay ahead of detection software.

In the academic world, plagiarism by students, professors, or researchers is considered academic dishonesty or academic fraud and offenders are subject to academic censure, up to and including expulsion. Many institutions are using plagiarism detection software to detect potential plagiarism and to deter students from plagiarizing. But the practice of plagiarism through the use of appropriate word substitutions to escape detention software, known as rogeting quickly developed as students and unethical academics trying to stay ahead of detection software.
