Artist’s Books: Stefan Gunnesch
Stefan Gunnesch was recently awarded in a competition for the most beautiful German books. He will be visiting KHiO to present his publishing and studio practice ‘Bildschriftlich’ - focusing on contemporary hand-bound artists’ books.
Stefan Gunnesch works as a book designer with an emphasis on typography and collage artworks. He teaches Book Arts at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle and was recently awarded the "Förderpreis für junge Buchgestaltung" by the Buchkunst Foundation in the competition for the most beautiful German books.
Gunnesch’s photocollage publication Dazwischen deals with the remembering - as well as the forgetting - of one's own past. Colour photographs from the family archive are the starting point for a memory, recorded in a booklet, narrated in text and pictures. Each booklet is inspired by a concrete memory, a place or an encounter, and pinned to a narrow leporello. Black-and-white reproductions of photographs fit together into a sequential collage in between texts which hold the attempt to remember.
After the artist’s talk Gunnesch will facilitate ‘In between’ a post-disciplinary workshop with Associate Professor Victoria Browne. Students from the Academy and Art & Craft departments will take Dazwischen as a starting point and follow a similar problem-solving experience; by developing their ideas through a hands-on process of making an artist’s book. The workshop will combine book-arts with image and text driven content to foster publishing as artistic practice.
