Explanation, appeal and re assessment

Explanation of a grade
Students are entitled to receive an explanation for why their exam was graded as it was, cf. section 5.3 of the University and University College Act.

Requests for an explanation should be sent to postmottak@khio.no og merkes «Studieseksjonen/krav om begrunnelse for karakter».with the subject line “Studieseksjonen/ Krav om begrunnelse for karakter” (“Section of Academic Affairs/ Request for an explanation of a grade”).

Deadline
For oral exams or assessments of practical skills, requests for such an explanation must be submitted immediately after the student has been informed of the grade. For other types of assessments, requests for an explanation must be submitted no later than three weeks after the grade was announced.

Grading appeals
Appeals of a grade are processed pursuant to section 5.3 of the University and University College Act.

The appeal should be sent to postmottak@khio.no with the subject line “Studieseksjonen/ Klage på karakter” (“Section of Academic Affairs/ Appeal of a grade”).

If the appeal concerns a group work where a common grade is assigned to all the members, each one of the students must give their consent to and sign the appeal.

When appealing a grade, the exam shall be re assessed.

When appealing a grade after the student has received his or her diploma, the diploma must be returned for the appeal to be processed.

Deadline
A student may send a written appeal of the grade within three weeks after the exam results have been published.

For courses with ongoing assessments, the student may first submit the appeal when the final grade for the course has been published.

Appeal on the grounds of a formal error
Appeal on the grounds of a formal error during the exam (i.e. errors concerning the exam questions/assignment or how either the exam itself or the grading was conducted) are processed pursuant to section 5.2 of the University and University College Act.

The appeal must be submitted in written form and must state the reasons for the appeal. It should be sent to postmottak@khio.no with the subject line “Studieseksjonen/ Klage over formelle feil” (“Section of Academic Affairs/ Appeal on the grounds of a formal error”).

When making such an appeal on formal grounds after the student has received his or her diploma, the diploma must be returned for the appeal to be processed.

If the appeal is successful, it shall be determined whether the error can be rectified by re-assessing the exam or whether a new exam shall be held.

Deadline
The deadline for lodging an appeal is three weeks after the student was first aware of, or should have been aware of, the circumstances that motivated the appeal.

New grading
If the appeal is successful, the exam shall be re-assessed. An appeal on the grounds of a formal error may also lead to a re-assessment.

During a re-assessment, the same text or work shall be evaluated anew by at least two new examiners, of whom one must be an external examiner, cf. section 3.9 of the University and University College Act. The new examiners shall not know of the grade, explanation or the student’s stated reason for the appeal. Note that the grade can be changed in either the appellant’s favour or disfavour.
