What are Examiner Guidelines?

Examiner guidelines are a key tool to ensure that students assessments are conducted on a consistent and academically sound basis. They help to promote fairness, quality, and transparency in the examination process.

Why are Examiner Guidelines important?

The examiner guidelines are intented to:

  • Ensure a shared understanding of the assessment criteria
  • Support fair and consistent evaluation of student performance
  • Fullfil the legal requirement in Section 11-7, third paragraph of the Universities and Colleges Act, which states that written examiner guidelines must be prepared for all exams.

Types of Examiner Guidelines at KHiO

KHiO uses two types of examiner guidelines:

  1. General examiner guidelines
  2. Adapted examiner guidelines

Roles and Responsibilities

Dean

  • Determines which courses should have general or adapted examiner guidelines

Course Responsible

  • Prepares the examiner guidelines
  • Ensures that all examiners receive the guidelines well in advance of the exam

When Should the Examiner Guideline Be Ready?

  • Examiners must receive the guidelines before the exam takes place
  • The guidelines should be made available to students after the grade has been determined
  • Preferably, the guidelines should be published in the course's Canvas room
