Shared Reading

During lunch hour we will read and discuss Virginia Woolf’s classic essay Craftsmanship (1937) with the Shared Reading facilitator Thor Magnus Tangerås.

Of course, you can catch them and sort them and place them in alphabetical order in dictionaries.
But words do not live in dictionaries; they live in the mind.
If you want proof of this, consider how often in moments of emotion when we most need words we find none.
Yet there is the dictionary; there at our disposal are some half-a-million words all in alphabetical order.
But can we use them?
No, because words do not live in dictionaries, they live in the mind. 

How does it work?

Shared Reading groups are open to all and free to attend. 

A group of people, one of them a trained Reader Leader, reads a great novel, short story or poem aloud. We stop and talk about what we have read. There is no need for group members to read aloud or speak – it’s fine to just listen. The idea is to create a space where people feel at ease. 

Reading the literature aloud in real-time, means that everyone is involved in a shared, live experience. Group members are encouraged by the Reader Leader to respond personally, sharing feelings, thoughts and memories provoked by the reading. (thereader.org.uk).

Thor Magnus Tangerås

Thor Magnus Tangerås (f. 1972) er førsteamanuensis ved Westerdals Institutt for Kreativitet, Fortelling og Design, Høyskolen Kristiania. Han underviser i kreativ skriving og retorikk. Forskningsinteressene hans er transformative leseopplevelser, biblioterapi, Shared Reading og poesiens vilkår og muligheter. Tangerås har vært leseleder siden 2015, og har hatt SR-grupper med eldre og unge både i Norge og England. Han har kurset leseledere i metoden siden 2018.
