KHiO 30th Anniversary!

In 2026, we mark 30 years since the Oslo National Academy of the Arts was established. The anniversary will be marked and celebrated.

On October 30 2026, we invite you to a jubilee celebration with events taking place both at KHiO and at Oslo City Hall. The registration for the honorary doctorate lectures, which will take place on the main stage at KHiO, is now open. The celebration in Oslo City Hall is a closed event. Guests, students and staff will soon receive invitations.

On August 1 1996, five previously independent art institutions were merged into a single institution: The Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts (1909), The National College of Art and Design (1818), the Academy of Theatre (1953), the Academy of Opera (1964), and the National College of Ballet and Dance (1979).

Three decades later, the Oslo National Academy of the Arts is a vibrant house for artistic research, education, exhibitions and performances – driven by passion, curiosity, knowledge and hard work. The anniversary is an opportunity to look back at our history, celebrate the people who have shaped the institution, and look ahead to the next 30 years.

A Historical Retrospective

All kunst i dette hus. 2010

This brochure was published in 2010 and looks back at how the building evolved from a sailcloth mill into an academy of arts. The title, “All art in this house,” is a quotation from the opening speech given by Gudmund Hernes, the Minister of Church, Education and Research at the time, at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts in 2005. Unfortunately, the brochure is only available in Norwegian.
