Avgang 2026: Catriona Grace Beckett / Float

Avgang 2026: Catriona Grace Beckett / Float

For Float Catriona Grace Beckett exhibits a recent body of paintings in the project space at Stavebygget as her solo MFA project.

Float emerged through realising a series of works which present a visual lightness, where softness surfaces through stroke and honed palette. In Float, the works construct their own visual logic. Through their clarity - where form and colour exist emphatically on the surface - non-signifying symbols both reveal everything about the images and simultaneously render them enigmatic.

On the opening night, a reiteration of the performance titled The Guild of Abstraction and Image Making, performed previously at Board Room Committee Room in Glasgow, occurs. A community of painters, The Guild of Abstraction and Image Making operates through mutual aid, the sovereignty of their craft, and a critical linkage between abstraction and grassroots democracy. In the performance the guild members discuss aleatoric - chance based - processes of image making and explore how these methods can be used for assigning roles in the guild.

The performance is an embodied event where visitors can follow the paper script of the performers’ speech. The performance is written by Catriona Beckett and performed by Yanina Zaichanka and Marea Lazzára Vigesaa.

Catriona Grace Beckett

Catriona Beckett b.1996 Glasgow, Scotland, works at the intersection of two modes of creativity: process based image making and performative event making.

With playfulness and intent, Catriona creates paintings, drawings and collages. Employing shape through deliberate simplicity and also through automatic brushwork, each method seeking to explore form in its wide scope. The specifics of material sensibilities are pertinent, as surface, colour and medium, are actors which come to construct the paintings. The performance practice is a speculative lens for thinking through critical discourse surrounding painting. Thematic concerns associated with the practice are extended into surreal and informative narratives. Catriona explores visual abstraction and its layers - unknowability, playfulness,

transformation - through performances informed by feminist science fiction, engaging directly with feminist and political discourse.
