Avgang 2026: Lukas Sødahl Moland / This is not fly fishing
This is not fly fishing is Lukas Sødahl Moland's individual MFA graduation project.
At the heart of the art of fly fishing lies the attempt at catching something you can’t see, or even with certainty know is there.
Through rod and line, the fisherman extends his body in brief impersonations of an insect touching the surface of the water.
All communication between fish and man happens here; where of their worlds and visions meet and stop.
To make the fish leave its element, you’ve got to blend in and stand out against that surface, punctured by an array of ripples from other landings and take-offs. One among the thousands of other flies that continuously make contact with the blurred screen of light above the fish.
This is how we imagine the fish´s point of view anyway, if we believe that it doesn’t know any better. But we can’t know. Maybe the fish knows better (which is why he hasn’t caught one yet).
And if the light is right, the line becomes invisible. And if you didn’t know any better, from a distance, you’d be looking at a man standing in a river, knee deep, alone, practicing some kind of tai chi with a hat on.
