Design as Writing

Design as Writing

How do we look at language? And what does design have to do with writing? In this talk, text designer and Professor Arja Karhumaa will share questions that drive their practice and research, the work done with their experimental publishing collective Multipöly, as well as ideas behind the upcoming Centre for Text Margins at Aalto University.a.

Arja Karhumaa is a text designer and Associate Professor in Visual Communication Design at Aalto University (Finland) and co-founder of the experimental publishing collective Multipöly. Karhumaa’s work spans across typography and experimental writing, poetry and scholarship. Curious about unseen currents within contemporary visual communication, they seek new modes of diffractive and sustainable design practice beyond commercial interest. They are interested in language and typography, publishing as art/design practice, and redefining communication design in the context of new materiality.
