Title of lecture: 
New Materiality and Public Space

The recent turn in the visual arts towards the tactile and the material, and a renewed interest in materiality as such, has emerged after a long period of dominance by conceptual art. “New materialism” is also a theoretical movement that has made an impact in the art world in various contexts internationally. In this lecture I will through recently realized art projects in public space such as at Stortinget (Goshka Macuga, Ane Graff, Ida Ekblad, Aurora Passero, Outi Pieski, Ann Cathrin November Høibo, Else Marie Jakobsen) Deichman Bjørvika (Karen Pettersen, Freja Burgess, Karin Wyssenbach Røsaker, Anna Weilhartner) and Juridiske fakultet (UiO) (Tiril Hasselknippe, Marianne Heier, Lotte Konow Lund og Steinar Haga Kristensen), explore and discuss how “new materialism” serve as an active and potent component and how an institution like Public Art Norway - KORO now are working with artists in public space commissions.

Trude Schjelderup Iversen (b. 1974) is an art theorist, curator and critic. She is previous director of UKS, Young Artist Society (2001-2005), Ph.D Candidate in art theory (University of Oslo 2007-d.d), curatorial resident and lecturer in contemporary art theory at Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York (2008-2009). Schjelderup Iversen has contributed to numerous periodicals, books, journals and magazines including Lights On (Astrup Fearley Museum), Capital it Fails us Now (edited by Simon Sheikh), Art and its Institutions (edited by Nina Montmann). Editor of the anthologies The New Administration of Aesthetics (Torpedo Press 2007) with Tone Hansen and Critical Issues in Public Art (2016, with Nora C. Nerdrum). She works as a senior curator at Public Art Norway

Welcome to this new series of cross-disciplinary lectures at the Art and Craft department. This lecture series highlights the breadth and depth of the art practices that the Art and Craft department encompasses. Each lecture will feature current issues pertaining to and spanning the five areas: Art and Public Space, Textile, Ceramics, Print and Drawing, Metal- and Jewellery Art.
