KHiO to Host the 2023 Queen Sonja Singing Competition

KHiO to Host the 2023 Queen Sonja Singing Competition

Beginning 15 August, the KHiO campus will be rigged up and ready for the preliminary rounds and then the semi-final of the 2023 Queen Sonja Singing Competition. The grand final concert, to be broadcast on TV, will take place at the Norwegian Opera & Ballet on 26 August 2023.

40 opera talents from 19 countries have now been selected to participate in the preliminary phase of the competition.

“We are really looking forward to serving as the hosts and receiving these exceptional, up-and-coming opera talents from the entire world who will compete for a spot in the final of this major and internationally prestigious singing competition,” says Anna Einarsson, the dean of the Academy of Opera at KHiO. Einarsson is also a member of the council, and in 2023 she will serve as the leader of the jury that will choose three young vocalists in Norway to participate in a recently created career development programme.”

“It really means a lot to us that the Queen Sonja Singing Competition is being held at KHiO for the first time ever,” she adds. “It gives us a great degree of international visibility, not only for us here at the Academy of Opera, but for all of KHiO. For our students, this means an invaluable learning opportunity, as they can watch the singers up close in the competition, sing in master classes with some of the world’s most high-profile artists and also follow all the lectures, panel debates and concerts.”

“The opera students will also be invited to the grand final at the Norwegian Opera & Ballet. Our close collaboration with the Queen Sonja Singing Competition is highly valuable to us and to opera education in Norway. So, as I say, we are very, very happy.”

The Opera Academy’s career development programme

The Queen Sonja Singing Competition has initiated a new career development programme for singing students in Norway. The programme includes modules that prepare singers on how to successfully meet key requirements and expectations within the field of professional opera. This year’s competition offers special attention to young Norwegian vocalists who are preparing for a career in singing.

The programme’s first gathering will take place at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts during the competition on 15–26 August 2023. There will be additional gatherings in Oslo in October 2023 and March 2024, in addition to digital sessions throughout the year. The programme is set up for three singing students who will be offered guidance and instruction throughout the 2023/24 academic year.

The opera students at KHiO already follow the competition closely. The Academy of Opera has also decided to move forward the kick-off of the new academic year in August so that all the students will be able to observe the entire process and thereby get the most out of the singing competition taking place on campus. Singing students up to the age of 25, who can make up their address in Norway, are eligible to apply.
