Master's programme in Theatre (2024)

Brief course description

The Master Project offers you a challenging and stimulating opportunity to apply and further develop the artistic methods and research skills you have acquired throughout the program. By working individually or collaboratively, you will undertake a research project that culminates in a theatre work, written play, or artistic project. The Master Project aligns with the education's overall goals, as it encourages you to apply and further develop your skills and knowledge in your specialization. The Master Project encourages creativity and critical thinking, skills that are essential for the contemporary field of theatre.

The course’s learning outcomes

The master project will provide an opportunity for you to develop and demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

  • Identify, appropriately select, utilize and research artistic methods within the field of your chosen specialization.
  • Exhibit a high level of professional commitment and a cooperative attitude that is sensitive to the collaborative nature of the creative process.
  • Effectively substantiate ideas and opinions about your artistic work, demonstrating a reflective approach to your own aesthetic principles, thoughts and beliefs.
  • Be able to produce and develop a theatre production/written play/theatre project of highquality with the ability to manage physical resources accurately, creatively and effectively to ensure high production values.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop, document and present a portfolio of original works, based on a pertinent research question.

Teaching and learning methods

You will work independently but will be supervised throughout the project.

In the beginning of the term, each student must present a project description, including a production plan and a budget.

The Master Project must include:

  • A theatre production/project within a production frame set by the school, shaped on a pertinent research question. This will be produced either at Oslo National Academy of the Arts or in collaboration with relevant partners/institutions in the field of performing arts.
  • A portfolio (in PDF format) summarizing work from the two-year program can include text, sound files, video recordings, photos, drawings, sketches, etc. Models and material samples can also be added to the portfolio. The portfolio must include a written chapter with documentation of the process and a critical reflection on the results.
  • Lastly, a performance lecture of a minimum of 60 minutes, including a critical dialogue with examiners, is also required.

In the case of an internal theatre production, students must form and collaborate in one or more creative teams. The composition of the teams will principally be determined by the students themselves but will be guided by the course supervisor to ensure that everyone is included in teams.

You are responsible for your own progression in the Master Project; this entails meeting the given coursework requirements and being in regular contact and keeping appointments with your supervisor so that artistic progression is maintained.

The course requirements are:

  • active participation and compulsory attendance at set times for teaching, supervision, group work, excurions, discussion forums and courses
  • completion of assignments in accordance with the current ethical guidelines at the Academy
  • realization and presentation of Master Project
  • submission of documentation and reflection
  • public performance lecture with the examiners

Assessment

The assessment form aligns with the educational goals of the program by evaluating the students' ability to research and develop a reflective approach to their own aesthetic principles, thoughts, and beliefs.

The assessment form assesses your ability to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained throughout the program to create a theatre production, written play, or artistic project based on a research question of your own choosing. The artistic portfolio and performance lecture assess your ability to document and reflect upon your research questions, artistic process, and results, demonstrating a reflective approach to your work. The panel assessment evaluates the students' ability to present and discuss your work and portfolio with academic examiners, demonstrating a critical and informed understanding of the artistic processes of your chosen field of specialization. Passing this assessment is a requirement for you to do a public presentation and conversation with the examiners, ensuring that you have successfully demonstrated your ability to meet the learning outcomes of the course.

The course is graded pass/fail.
