Stage Design and Composition
Brief course description
In Stage Design and Composition, you will have the opportunity to explore and investigate various theoretical, creative, and practical aspects of stage design and composition. We aim to enhance your understanding of artistic methods, including visual analysis, composition, concept development, scenography, and light and sound design.
You will be challenged to apply your creative and collaborative skills towards the development and realization of various theatrical etudes, which will be presented and evaluated throughout the spring semester. The course aims to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the various elements involved in stage design and composition, while also fostering your artistic abilities and encouraging collaboration with your peers.
The course’s learning outcomes
The program provides opportunities for you to develop and demonstrate the following learning outcomes:
- Identify and apply a range of theoretical and practical approaches to stage design and composition, utilizing artistic methods such as visual analysis, concept development, and scenography
- Produce and develop stage designs for theatre productions, incorporating elements such as costumes, choreography, sound, and light design to support the artistic vision and overall dramaturgy of the production
- Demonstrate your ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary theatre ensemble, contributing proactively and positively to the creative process and the final production
- Develop a critical understanding of your artistic practice and be able to engage in reflective self-evaluation and analysis to continuously improve your work
Teaching and learning methods
Classroom-based lessons and workshops are designed to equip you with the necessary skills, techniques and knowledge to successfully complete the practical aspects of the course.
The composition of the teams will principally be determined by the students themselves but will be guided by the course supervisor to ensure that everyone is included in teams. The course is delivered through weekly workshops and production seminars, one-to-one mentoring and coaching and collaborative production work culminating in the production of a final performance or event.
Course requirements are:
Active participation and compulsory attendance at set times for teaching, supervision, group work, excursions, discussion forums and courses. Submission and presentation of compulsory course assignments to set deadlines.
Assessment
Assessment will take the form of an artistic portfolio where you will document and reflect upon your research questions, artistic process and results. The portfolio will be reviewed at the end of the term. You will also be required to engage with an oral evaluation where you will discuss their work and portfolio with teachers and the technical staff of KHIO. The course is graded pass/fail.
