Academic writing and how to cite

Here are some useful links and information about how to write academically and cite properly.

You are expected to use external sources when writing a paper of your own. The important thing is to cite the sources properly in your text. This is to ensure that the originator is credited, but also to make it possible for readers to locate the sources you have used. Passing someone else's work off as your own is considered plagiarism, which will lead to your paper being rejected.

You can find books about academic writing in the library catalogue.

The library can also provide guidance and courses in literature searching, source assessment, and reference management tools, such as Zotero.

Proper citation is important because:

  • it demonstrates academic integrity
  • you avoid plagiarism
  • the originator is credited
  • it provides a basis for an assessment of the text
  • it makes it possible to locate the sources
  • it makes your research reproducible by others
