Recognition of previous education

What does recognition of previous education mean?

If you have previously taken higher education within the same academic field as the program you are enrolled in at KHiO, you can apply to get this education recognized as part of your education at KHiO. In practice this means that the subjects you have taken previously substitute the respective subjects at KHiO.

It is not possible to get education from a lower level recognized as part of a degree on a higher level (for example, subjects from high school cannot substitute bachelor's level courses, and bachelor's courses cannot substitute master's level courses).

It is important that you sign yourself up for all obligatory courses when completing the semester registration regardless of whether or not you have applied for recognition of previous education. You can withdraw from these courses at a later point in case your application for recognition of previous education is approved.

Your application will be considered by the dean at your department. Please contact the student consultant at your department should you have any questions.

Application deadline and required documents

The deadline to apply is September 1 for the current academic year.

You apply by submitting an application in Studentweb.

You must document the following when submitting your application:

  • Study plan(s). You must comment on/highlight the parts in the study plan(s) from your previous education where you believe the similarities are with the courses offered at KHiO.
  • Diploma(s) and/or official transcript(s) of records.

Recognition of previous education and study progression requirements

The students applying for recognition of previous education should be aware that if the recognition is granted, this will lead to it not being possible to achieve the 60 ECTS yearly progression requirement.
This is especially important for those of you relying on full student loan/scholarship from Lånekassen.
