Art and Craft Lecture: Emma Nishimura
Exploring the different forms and incarnations that memory can take, Nishimura have investigated how specific memories can be navigated, remembered and revisited.
Nishimuras art practice is based within traditional intaglio, photo-intaglio and digital printmaking - I love the processes, creative challenges and endless possibilities that surround this art form. I also frequently incorporate paper cutting, drawing, papermaking and sculpture into my practice. Working with the materiality inherent to printed things, I layer and build up imagery, while cutting other elements away. Using repeated forms and gestures I create individual pieces, installations and large series of works.
BIO:
Emma Nishimura works with a diversity of media, including printmaking, photography, sculpture and installation. Emma received her BA from the University of Guelph, and her MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including, the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, ON; the Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK; International Print Center New York, New York, NY; and the Taimiao Art Gallery, Beijing, China. Emma’s work is in a number of public and private collections, such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Japanese Canadian National Museum, and Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada. She has received grants from the Ontario Arts Council, and won awards from Open Studio, the International Print Center New York, Art in Print, and The Print Center. Most recently she was named the recipient of the Queen Sonja Print Award 2018. Emma is an Assistant Professor and the Chair of Photography, Printmaking and Publications at OCAD University.
Art and Craft Lectures
Welcome to this new series of cross-disciplinary lectures at the Art and Craft department. This lecture series highlights the breadth and depth of the art practices that the Art and Craft department encompasses. Each lecture will feature current issues pertaining to and spanning the five areas: Art and Public Space, Textile, Ceramics, Print and Drawing, Metal- and Jewellery Art.
