«Ei saa peittää!» Finner snakker om Design: Thomas Modeen

What is going on in Finnish design circles today and what does Finnish design look like in 2018?

Thomas Modeen, along with his wife Maysaa Almumin, are the founding Directors of Architects Independent, a Doha, Qatar, based Finnish/ Kuwaiti architecture & design collective. Trained as architects, their practice, nevertheless, has engaged in projects ranging from jewelry-design to architecture, advertising to film, and a number of practices that flout categorization. Thomas has also taught and lectured about architecture and design on multiple continents and is currently faculty in the Graduate/ Design Studies program at VCUARTS in Qatar.

Thomas studied Product Design at Parsons School of Design in New York. He also has a degree from the Architectural Association (AA), and completed a MPhil at the Royal College of Art (RCA), both in London. He completed his PhD (with a focus on how 3D printing can be applied in the context of Design and Architecture) in collaboration with the Rapid Manufacturing Research Group (RMRG) at Loughborough University (UK). He’s a registered architect in Finland (Architect SAFA).

Celebrating Empirical Vagueness – Stories About a more Elastic Approach to Design

The presentation will include a number of stories about a variety of designs – ranging from jewelry design to product designs, furniture design to interior design, architecture to urban design, and a number of designs that don’t comfortably fit any preset design categories…
What unifies them all is that most of them have been made through various digital fabrication related means, and that they all have been catalyzed by a predetermined question (or two).

All such aims have been realized through a conceptual framework that acknowledges and infuses the designs with a balanced amount of the rational and the emotive, the functional as well as the sensorial – a process that is experimental, iterative, and intentionally category free (empirically vague), in its implementation…
