Avgang 2025: Åsa Båve / Bakgrunden omsluter

Bakgrunden omsluter is Åsa Båve's individual MFA graduation project.

I measure fat, lye and water. The lye is alkaline. If I put it directly on my skin, it eats me. It stings, itches and hurts me. When I mix it with the right amount of fat and water, it turns into glycerine. Then it lubricates, nourishes and protects me. Now I’ve created The Soap.

The Soap is hard and fragile. The Soap is in constant change. The Soap allows itself to be influenced by its surroundings. As soon as it enters the water, it swells, foams, spread out and dissolves. Bubbles embed everything in a mist.

I leave you. Sometimes for months, or years. When I return you’ve changed. Where once there was The Soap and water, now there’s only a crust of skin, fragile and tentative.

Sometimes I take care of The Soap, sometimes The Soap takes care of me.

MFA graduation projects

The final year Master students will present individual graduation projects in different spaces at KHiO and around Oslo. These projects will be diverse in form and will take place at different times during the spring semester. Some of the projects will open simultaneously. The graduating students will also collectively explore the group format in a curated group exhibition.
