Artistic Research Lecture: Robel Temesgen: Sleeping with(in) Water

Robel Temesgen will talk about his thesis project, Practising Water; of Rituals and Engagements through the lens of his ongoing exhibition ‘Practising Water; Report #1’.

Following his lecture, Professor Jan Verwoert will join him for a conversation on the subjects of the project and his recent research trip to Sekela the source of the Blue Nile in the northwest of Ethiopia. The exhibition Practising Water: Report #1 is the first manifestation of the artist’s long-term research project exploring the connections between bodies of water and the human communities that have formed around them - the folklore, customs, and habits or forms of life that bind people and place together, and the ways in which spirituality and animism form a bridge between the human world and others. The exhibition is on at Kunsthall Oslo from 03.03.23 to 16.04.23.

Robel Temesgen is currently a Ph.D. fellow in Artistic Practice at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. He received MFA from Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art, University of Tromsø, Norway in 2015, and a BFA in Fine Art (Painting) from Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, Addis Ababa University in 2010. Temesgen’s work focuses on symbiotic relations and the languages around places, people, and spirits. His lengthy projects include Adbar, Addis Newspaper, Jebenas, and Practicing Water. His work has been widely exhibited on international platforms in solo and group shows. Temesgen is a Lecturer at Alle School of fine arts and Design, Addis Ababa University, and lives and works between Addis Ababa and Oslo.

This lecture will be co-hosted by professor Jan Verwoert and is a part of the Academy of Fine Arts public program.
