A Baby, A Beast

A Baby, A Beast

As a part of her Ph.D. research, Mari Koppanen exhibits her experimentations with SCOBY, a cellulose-based biomaterial containing various species of bacteria and yeast. Her exhibition A Baby, A Beast explores tactility through fungal and bacterial matter, and investigates the line between living and non-living.

Koppanen’s research strongly emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between humans and the non-human. It challenges the boundaries of contemporary design and material possibilities. Her aim is to garner an understanding of possible future applications of fungal materials while still approaching this extensive organism with sensitivity and respect.
