Avgang 2022: Now, that we’ve been together

“I think of the body as an archaeological container - where the language constellation inside you tells a story of time. A language constellation that dismantles the nation state as a fragment of history.”

This sound installation invites you to listen through a group of pillows placed on top of a soft carpet; provoking a sense of community. The piece starts every half hour - and it will shift between English and Swedish. The installation has a limited capacity and encourages you to remain for the entire duration of the work.

The starting point for this discussion is based on Embaie’s graduation project Now, that we’ve been together and will address questions around sustaining community, source material and methods.

After: Eli Mai Huang Nesse, Annalise Wimmer, Henrik Follesø Egeland, Tansiyu Chen, and Makda Embaie invites you to an early finnisage after the conversation in the social space of Kunstakademiet. Food and drinks will be served!

Makda Embaie is a poet and artist, educated at Konstfack, Biskop Arnö’s författarskola and at the Royal institute of art’s post-master course, Decolonizing Architecture. She will graduate from an MA in Fine arts from Kunsthøyskolen in Oslo this year, 2022. Now, that we have been together is a piece exploring togetherness through a listening session. Makda’s artistic practice is expressed through the portrayal, activation and practicing of her own specific experiences of the language. It has revealed components in her language that have to do with space, time and the specific body. It is an experience that negates the nation-state’s linear way of describing people and languages. Through installations, sound, text, film and photography, Makda shifts the focus from the narrative of the nation-state to the specific experience of language.

Det här ljudverket bjuder in dig att lyssna genom en grupp kuddar placerade på en mjuk matta; för att aktivera känslan av community genom ett antal kuddar placerade ovanpå en mjuk matta. Verket startar varje halvtimme - och kommer att skifta mellan engelska och svenska. Installationen har en begränsad kapacitet för antal besökare och uppmanar dig att stanna under hela verkets varaktighet.

Makda Embaie är poet och konstnär, utbildad på Konstfack, Biskop Arnö’s författarskola och på Kungl. Konsthögskolans post-master Decolonizing Architecture. Hon kommer att ta sin master examen i Biledkunst från Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo under 2022. Nu, när vi varit med varandra är ett verk som utforskar tillsammansskap genom en lyssningssession. Makdas konstnärliga praktik yttrar sig i gestaltning, aktivering och praktiserandet av sin egen erfarenhet av språk. Detta har avslöjat komponenter i hennes språk som har med plats, tid och den specifika kroppen att göra. Det är en erfarenhet som negerar nationalstatens linjära sätt att beskriva människor och språk på. Genom installation, ljud, text, film och fotografi, skiftar Makda fokus från nationalstaten till den specifika erfarenheten av språket.
