Jesús Carrillo / The Situated Museum

El Museo Situado is an assembly that involves collectives and neighbors of Lavapiés in which Reina Sofia Museum participates. Its goal is to develop cultural projects, that affect the local territory jointly and in the framework of Museum-as-network programs. We understand the cultural institution as a space of construction of the public sphere and of citizenship exploration that allows to reinforce other visions, diversifying agents and creative practices and incorporating other forms of knowledges, experiences and referents to the official spaces of culture. We believe in a museum on the side of the common good, that activates and gives greater visibility to the transformative power of society. Museo Situado opens a hybrid territory that generates alternative coordinates for cultural action, host a network of shared labor between institutions, individuals, and citizen collectives; a network based in mutualization of experiences that empower the social and transformative value of culture in the context of deep crisis we inhabit.

Jesús Carrillo is a professor of Contemporary Art History at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and has been Head of the Cultural Programmes Department of the Reina Sofía Museum since 2008. He combines the analysis of contemporary culture and cultural institutions with a critical reading of historical narratives of art. He has published: Arte in the Web (Madrid: Cátedra, 2004), Nature and Empire (Madrid: 12 streets, 2004) and Technology and Empire (Madrid: Nivola, 2003); and has as edited: Ways of doing: critical art, public sphere and direct action (Salamanca: Ediciones de la Universidad de Salamanca, 2001), Art Trends.
