Abakanowicz: Creation is Difficult
Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930–2017) lived a life of courage that defied confining categories of nationality, materiality, and gender. Beginning with her revolutionary and sexually charged Abakans—the only contemporary artworks named for their maker—she sparked the international fiber art movement while becoming a progenitor of installation art. For her, meaning is embodied in material—sensory, bodily, and real. Yet determined not to be restricted to any one media, Abakanowicz went on to make monumental yet vulnerable works that reveal the power of art in the psyche and in society. This talk will trace the artist’s life through her art, and look at the lessons and wisdom she sought to share.
Mary Jane Jacobs is a curator and writer who has championed public, site-specific, and socially engaged art. Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in 2018 she published Dewey for Artists with the University of Chicago Press. She is currently organizing an exhibition of Magdalena Abakanowicz for Tate Modern in London.
