Sunniva McAlinden is an artist based in Stockholm. She studied Fine Art at The Royal Institute of Art | Kungliga Konsthögskolan, Stockholm 1985 – 1990, and Postgraduate studies in Architecture at The School of Architecture, The Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, 2003 – 2004.
Investigating representation lies at the heart of her practice. McAlinden works with painting, three-dimensional constructions, installation, and photography. In the recent project and publication titled “Folly”, contemporary attitudes to abstraction and ornament are explored in relation to the paradoxical connotations of ”pure decoration”.
Recent exhibitions include MIND HOW YOU GO and FOLLY. An example of McAlinden’s numerous public commissions is RIDÅ, a stage curtain for the main auditorium of Moderna Museet, Stockholm. A current commission is for public art at the new Odenplan station, Stockholm City Line - Citybanan.
McAlinden has been teaching at BA, MA and PhD level since 2004. She was professor at the Department of Fine Art, Bergen National Academy of the Arts | Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen 2008 – 2010, Associate Professor 2004 – 2008.
