Solveig Kringlebotn

Solveig Krinelborn (Kringlebotn) has been affiliated with the Academy of Opera at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts since 2014, and has been employed in a permanent part-time position as assistant professor from 2018 and as professor from 2019. She also serves as a professor at the Barratt Due Institute of Music.

Kringelborn herself studied opera at the University College of Opera in Stockholm. After graduating from there, she began immediately to perform leading roles at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm and the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo. She first became known internationally during the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1991, when she performed in the premiere of Witold Lutosławski’s song cycle Chantefables et Chantefleurs, as conducted by the composer himself. Two years later she achieved her international opera breakthrough as Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte during the prestigious Salzburg Festival.

Since then she has sung on all the major opera stages in the world, toured with the most famous orchestras and worked with the premier conductors and directors of the time. She has also participated in many radio and TV shows in Norway, for example as a mentor and opera judge in the prime-time NRK hit Stjernekamp (“The Battle of the Stars”).

She remains active, and in recent years she has for example sung in the newly built La Philharmonie in Paris, and she still performs the role of Carlotta in the first production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera in Norway. But her primary job is as an educator, and several of Norway’s best singers have been helped by Kringelborn.

Solveig Kringelborn was made Knight 1st Class of the Order of St Olav in 2004 by King Harald. She has also received the Norwegian Critics Award (for Mimi in La Bohème at the Norwegian Opera) and has been honoured with awards such as the Arts Council Norway Honorary Award, the Anders Jahre Culture Prize, the Lindeman Prize and the Spellemann Award.
